Biographical Sketches of the Officers and
Members of the Twenty-seventh General Assembly of Missouri, Together
with State Officers, etc. J. M. Hawkins The Representative from Stone county, is a steady old farmer, and is a quiet unassuming man, but a man of good sound judgment. He was elected to fill the vacancy of the Jon. James M. Moore, who died here at the Capital Februart, 1873. Should Mr. Hawkins ever be a candidate again, there would be little doubt about his being indorsed by even a larger majority than he was at the special election in which he was elected to his present seat without his knowledge. This was a case where the office sought the man and not the man the oddice. It would be better for the interest of the State if there were more such examples to be found in her borders. He was born in Granger county, Tennessee, on the 20th of January, 1819, and first moved to Greene county in this State from his native State.
