George Gilbert, a well-to-do farmer residing near Pollock, Sullivan Co., committed suicide a few nights ago by hanging. He was missed during the night by his family and the next morning he was found hanging to an apple tree near the house. He had but recently been discharged from the insane asylum at St. Joseph .

His Wife Missing
A.J. Phipps in Jail at Milan, MO.,
Charged with Murder
Milan , MO., June 21 – One of the most brutal murders ever committed in Sullivan County is believed to have been committed in the city last night. A. J. Phipps went home drunk last night and quarreled with his wife.
This morning she is missing and has yet to be found.
His little daughter says: “He hit mamma over the head three or four times”.
There was stains all over the bed clothing and a corn knife was found a short distance from the house, supposed to be the instrument used in the murder.
Phipps was arrested and is in jail. He is the man who some time ago cut out the tongue of his infant child causing instant death and narrowly escaped lynching.

His Sixth Wife Feeds Him Poison
Cyrus Cummings of Linneus, Mo., Dead and Mrs. Cummings VI in Jail.
Milan , Mo., July 4. – [Special.] – Cyrus Cummings of Linneus was poisoned last night by his wife and daughter. He was married to the woman about a month ago. She came from Omaha, Neb.
This was his sixth wife, and they are all living. The wife and daughter are in jail in Linneus.

Some Victims of Their Patriotism
Four Killed and Several Injured in Accidents in Various Cities
Many accidents marred the celebrations of the Fourth outside Chicago. Some of these were fatal, while in others the victims of their patriotism got off with only injuries.
The Killed George, Marion, at Milan, Mo., was killed by a heavy pole striking him. It was used to hold a balloon in which George was to ascend last evening for a parachute drop.

FOR MURDERS COMMITTED TWO YEARS AGO
A Man Alleged to be a Kansas Murderer Captured in Missouri
Garden City, Kas., Feb. 8 —[Special.]—A Deputy Sheriff arrived here today from Sullivan County, Missouri, with Ed Vandever, charged with the murder of W. R. Davis. In July, 1886,
Vandever and a companion named C. F. Brown committed the murder to get a team of mules owned by Davis, which they brought to town and sold to a dealer.
The two men were chased by a Sheriff's poise and Brown was overtaken in Morton County, where he resisted arrest and was riddled with Winchester bullets. Vandever
has not been heard of since until last Saturday, when a telegram was received from the Sheriff of Sullivan County, Missouri, asking if he was wanted here. The prisoner protests that he is not the man.
