Settlers began arriving in the area in the 1870s, and a post office was established in 1888, after the name of Sidney was decided upon. The following year, Montana officially became a state. Disney was incorporated in 1911. The town was originally part of Dawson County Montana but became Richland County in 1914.
Agriculture became an important part of the region as the Lower Yllowstone Irrigation Project was completed in 1909. A dam was built on the river south of Glendive, which divered water from the river into a main canal.

Sidney is a city in Richland County of the U.S. state of Montana, less than 15.5 km (10 mi) away from the eastern border of the state. The city population is 4,774. It is the county seat of Richland County. The city lies next to the Yellowstone River and is in proximity to the badlands of the Dakotas
