Confederate Amnesty Papers  

To his Excellency Andrew Johnson Resident of the United States

The petition of Archibald G. Carter, a citizen of Davie County, in the state of North Carolina aged sixty years old, would respectfully state unto your excellency that his canable property will probably exceed seventy thousand dollars.

Petitioner would further state unto your excellency that he has voluntarily participated Y sympathezed with the rebellion; but petitioner states that he was originally opposed susecezion, that petitioner always belonged to the democratic party & after the Proclamation of President Lincoln, callling for a chaucery courts, your petition with the great ________ of her party, was willing & azenter co & forever the sesezion of North Carolina & especially abel he so azsent & agree to & voluntraily participated sympathise arch the secysion & rebellion after the secezsion of the state by Virginia ___________ believed in the right of secezcion.

Petitioner would further state your excellency that he is now fully convinced of his error & sincerely regrets thus North Carolina ever succeded from the _______ union. He truly & freely admits that secezion was utterly wrong & agreed _________ & frel____is willing & really be ___ all in his power in conceding the evil secezion & petitioner here solemnly pledges_______ zealously he asks in the reorganization of the state of North Carolina & in following his native state in her time & legitemate position under the constitution & laws of the United States as ordered by your excellency.

Petition would further state unto your excellency that althought he has erroneoulsy participated in teh rebellion, yet petitioner solemnly aires taht he has never been greed of _______ __________ or of the ________ state.

Petitioner never actually took up arms against the ______ states, never held any civil office ______ the so called conederale government & is oly excluded, (as he is allirsick) from the benefits or the Amnesty proclamation of your excellency by reasxon of his tonable _______-exceedeling the sum of seventy thousand dollars petitioner having taken & subscribed & filed in this his ___ application for pardon the each prescribedc in the such Amnesty Proclamation earnestly solicits your excellency governly to condescend to grant ________ petitioner a full & free pardon of ______afese & restore him to all her rights & priveledges as a citizen of the United States, that ____ previous to the rebellions. and your peitioner as in state bound will __________

I, Archibald G Carter a farmer of the County of Davie, State of North Carolina, do solemnly swear or affirm, in presence of Almight God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference tot he emancipation of slaves: So help me God.
