Richard B. Benbury, Jr.
Private, North Carolina Infantry
.

Richard B. Benbury, Jr., son of Richard B. and Mary Benbury, was born in Gatesville, North Carolina, in 1844. Was sent to the Virginia Military Institute in February, 1862, where he remained for a few months, and then entered a North Carolina regiment. In 1864 young Benbury, together with his elder brother James, received a furlough for a few weeks, and returned to their home in Gatesville. Several days elapsed, both were taken sick with disease contracted in camp, and, after a very short illness, they died within four hours of each other, and were buried in the same grave. Their widowed mother followed these her only children to the grave in a few months, leaving no one to tell the story of their lives.
