GODWIN, Hannibal Lafayette, a Representative from North Carolina; born on a farm near Dunn, Harrnett County, N.C., November 3, 1873; attended the common schools and Trinity College (now Duke University), Durham, N.C.; studied law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; was admitted to the bar in 1896 and commenced practice in Dunn, N.C.; elected mayor of Dunn in 1897; member of the State senate in 1903; member of the Democratic State executive committee 1904-1906; elected as a Democrat to the Sixtieth and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1907-March 3, 1921); chairman, Committee on Reform in the Civil Service (Sixty-second through Sixty-fifth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1920; engaged in the practice of his profession until his death in Dunn, N.C., June 9, 1929; interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

Hannibal Lafayette Godwin, Democrat, of Harnett County, was born November 3, 1873, on a farm near Dunn, in Harnett County, N. C. Educated in the schools of Dunn and at Trinity College, Durham, N. C. Read law at the University of North Carolina and was admitted to the Bar in September, 189&. Married Miss Mattie Barnes, December 23, 1896. Member of the State Senate of the North Carolina Legislature in 1903. Elected in 1904 Democratic Presidential Elector for the Sixth Congressional District of North Carolina. Member of the State Democratic Executive Committee from 1904 to 1906. Elected to the Sixtieth, Sixty-first, Sixty-second, Sixty-third, Sixty-fourth, Sixty-fifth, and Sixty-sixth Congresses. Address: Dunn, N. C.
