7. On 8th day of April 1865 Henry Andrews Biggs, a member of Manly’s battery attached to Cabells Battalion, of the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by Genl. Robert E. Lee, was wounded in the neck in an engagement with the enemy, was carried to the house of Mr. Tyree of Appomatox Co., Va on 9th and there, speechless, but apparently sensible, he lingered until Wednesday 12th April, and at 9 o’clock P.M. of that day, gently breathed his last among strangers and far from home and the loved ones there; and on 13th April was interred in the private burial ground of Mr. Overton, residing ½ mile from Mr. Tyree.  Thus fell our dear and beloved boy, defending the rights of his Country; and, in the Providence of an All wise God, he is spared the mortification of witnessing the subjugation of his native land.  He was 18 years old in February 1865.  He left home and joined the army in July 1864.  never to return.  – Rest thou in peace & quiet my dear, dear boy!
Dalkeith, May 7, 1865.

2. In August 1866 Lucy Elizabeth Biggs was suddenly seized with a hemorrhage of the lungs, the precussor of destroying consumption, under which she suffered until Friday 11th October 1867 &, at ½ after 10 o’clock P.M. of that day, her spirit took its flight to eternity, where, I humbly trust, she is now resting in the presence of her God and Savior.  She was 32 years old on 9th April 1867.  she was dutiful, affectionate amiable, self sacrificing and intelligent and no one ever lost a more beloved child.  Her sufferings were great, to prepare for her eternal rest, but borne with patience and meekness.  Her precepts and example, I fervently pray, may be heeded and followed, by my surviving children.  We have solid hope in her death, and as evidences of the exercises of her mind, I hereafter record what she wrote in pencil a short time before her death, when confined to her bed of languishing.  It was found in her Bible after her departure.  I find myself incapable to do justice to her character in this memento.

Prepare me, and my dear family, Gracious God, to meet her above around our Father’s throne! Her funeral was preached at my residence in Tarboro, by Mr. Owen on Sunday 13th, and her remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of my neighbors., and deposited in the Primative Baptist Church yard.

“The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away, Blessed be the name of the Lord!”
A.B.

“Every sorrow we meet with is a billow on this world’s troublesome sea, which we must cross, upon the cross to bear us nearer to our home.  Each trouble is meant to relax the world’s hold over us, and our hold upon the world; each loss to make us seek our gain in heaven; each bereavement to fix our hearts thither, whither we hope the treasures leant us are numerous; each.

Column 2
Chastisement to hasten our repentence for those sins for which God has so chastised us!

A few resolutions
(1st) To deny the cravings of a carnal appetitie in food, clothing, reading, thinking, acting-
(2d) To watch against an impetuous hasty spirit which often leads me to say what is trying to others.
(3d) To be more lowly; and in order to do that to practice more self examination and self denial
(3d) To exercise Charity and Forebearance
4th To be more lowly; and in order to do that to practice more self examination and self denial
5th To pray more and speak less and to meditate on Jesus. “Remember always the presence of God. Rejoice always in the will of God – do all to the glory of God.—
