Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina was established in 1750. It is the oldest church in this county and was established before the county itself.
Alexander Craighead, the first minister in Sugaw Creek was one of the first three ministers in this state. Mr. Craighead is accredited with haveing sown the first seed that lead to the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, which was signed May 20th, 1775.
Near the site of this church in September 1780, General Joseph Graham was severely wounded as his troops resisted General Cornwallis' march on Charlotte.
The original church was built in 1740, but later destroyed. The present building was rected between 1868 and 1869, and is the fifth building to have been erected by this congregation.
