Samuel Oscar Magurie, Republican, Representative from Surry County, was born at Madison, Dorchester County, Maryland. Son of Edward Oscar and Julia Frances (Williams) Maguire. Attended country school from 1889-1897; Shaftsbury College of Expression. Traveling salesman. Mason. Married Miss Rebecca Emeline Bracy, August 20, 1910. Four children. Address: Elkin, N. C.

J. F. B. MAYS, 1877.
Born in Surry county, North Carolina, April 4, 1827. Attended Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia, and Theological Department of Furman University, South Carolina. Graduated at Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina. Tutor of Mathematics in Furman University, 1855. Pastor of Mt. Moriah Church, Abbyville, South Carolina; Baptist Church at Greenville, South Carolina, 1858-1859. Agent Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1859. Instructor in Military Tactics and Mathematics in Military Institute of Tuskegee, Alabama, 1860-1861. Pastor of Baptist Church at Jackson, Tennessee, 18661872; Knoxville, 1872-1879; Jacksonville, Florida, 1881-1883; and Apopka, Florida, 1883. D. D., Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1872. Appointed Trustee of East Tennessee University, 1877. A founder of the Baptist Female Seminary at Jackson, Tenn. Trustee of various schools and seminaries and author of numerous papers and lectures on educational subjects. Died at Apopka, Florida, December 21, 1883.
