Brothers John and Thomas Ashcraft lived on Lanes Creek just south of MarshviUe in the late 1700s. They had moved from Orange County, North Carolina about the year 1786. John farmed his land located on Lick Branch of Lanes Creek. Thomas owned and operated a gristmill there.
John moved to the banks of Fishing Creek in South Carolina in 1799. Thomas died in Anson County and is buried near where his home was on Lanes Creek. The part of Anson County where they lived is located in present-day Union County.
