“30 Licences at 10 Shillings each is L 15 - -“. This may give some assurance that the occurrence of the same name at #18 is a different person. Names are numbered on the original list, though on many original lists, there are no numbers. Those lists not numbered on the original are numbered on the transcription to show sequence and avoid accidental omissions. The fee (called a “fine”) was levied by the State on each marriage license issued, and the Clerk of the Count Court in each County had to account with the State Comptroller for these State revenues. Unfortunately, this practice was carried on for only a few years. (CRH)
