Fielder, Michael Shean
Michael Shean Fielder died in Iraq on August 19, 2007. Prior to his death Michael was serving with the United States Army Veterinary Corps in Iraq caring for military working dogs.
Michael was born in Dallas, Texas on September 17, 1971 and moved to North Carolina in 1984. After graduating from high school Michael served in the United States Navy from 1990 to 1994 aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy. Michael graduated from North Carolina State University in 1999 magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in zoology and received a doctorate of veterinary medicine in 2004 from the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation from veterinary school Michael was commissioned a Captain in the United States Army, where he served in the Veterinary Corps.
While in the service Michael's awards and decorations include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, James Fielder.
Michael is survived by his beloved wife, of nine years, Mary Thompson Fielder; his mother and step-father, Janet and Jesse King; step-mother Cathy Fielder;, sister, Allison Butler and her husband, Wes; brothers, John Fielder and his wife, Carrie, and Will Fielder and his fiancee, Dr. Elaine Nelson; mother and father-in- law, Margaret and A.B. Thompson Jr.; sister-in-law, Emily Cobb and her husband Barry; sisters-in-law, Laura Thompson, and Sarah Thompson; brother-in-law, Captain Arthur Thompson and his fiancee, Jessica Horton; grandparents, Lila King and Frank, and Chris Graves; as well as two nephews; and a niece. Michael also leaves his "four-legged- children" dogs, Bucket and Haley; and his cat, Frankie.
Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, beloved son, brother, and uncle, faithful friend, and a skilled and caring veterinarian. He was extremely well liked by the soldiers under his command, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday August 27, 2007 at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Captain Michael Shean Fielder, D.V.M. Memorial Scholarship established for deserving veterinary students at NCVMF, Inc., 4700 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27606.

Charter SHP Member Dies
RALEIGH – a charter member of the North Carolina Highway Patrol Laren R. Fisher of Raleigh is dead.  He died Sunday at the age of 71.
Fisher was a captain in the patrol in Asheville, Charlotte and Winston-Salem.
He later served as Commissioner of Motor Vehicles under Gov. Kerr Scott and in 1954 he became director of the malt beverage division of the state ABC board.
