BRAGG, BRAXTON, soldier, was born March 22, 1817, in Warren county, N. C. He was present at the battle of Monterey, Sept. 21-23, and was brevetted major for gallant conduct there. In 1847 he was brevetted lieutenantcolonel for gallantry at the battle of Buena Vista. From 1848 till 1855 he was engaged in frontier service at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., Fort Gibson, and Washita. When the civil war began he was appointed brigadier-general in the confederate army in 1861, and placed in command at Pensacola, Fla. In February, 1862, he was promoted major-general and ordered to join the army of the Mississippi. He took part in the battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, and was promoted general in place of A. S. Johnston, killed. After the evacuation of Corinth he succeeded General Beauregard in command of the department. In August he led a formidable force, 45,000 strong, into Kentucky. He died Sept. 27, 1876, in Galveston, Tex.
