MARCUS GREEN STEELMAN.
Marcus Green Steelman, Republican, Representative from Wilkes County, was born at Adley, N. C, April 17, 1886. Son of H. J. and Nancy (Pardue) Steelman. Was educated at Moravian Falls Academy, 1906; North Wilkesboro Graded School, 1907. Farmer. Teacher, 1907-1918. Baptist. Married Miss Delia Johnson, December 29, 1915. Two children.   Address: Adley, N. C.

STOKES, MONTFORD; governor, United States senator, was born in 1760 in Wilkes County, N. C. He was elected to the United States senate, which honor he declined; and in 1816 was again elected United States senator, and served until 1823. In 1826 he went into the general assembly of North Carolina as senator; and in 1829 was elected a member of the commons. In 1830 he was again elected to the commons, and in the same year was elected governor of the state.

US Navy Seaman Eugene Edward Swift, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Wilkes County, NC.
US Navy Seaman Eugene Edward Swift was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Navy, SN Swift served our country until March 9th, 1968 in Binh Hoa, South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was not married. It was reported that Eugene died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. Eugene was born on August 26th, 1945 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. SN Swift is on panel 44E, line 002 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.
Seaman Eugene Edward Swift, 22, Wilkes Navy man wounded in Vietnam on March 9, dies on that date, acording to an official telegram received Friday by his Mother, Mrs. Lora Swift, Wilkesboro Route 3, The death message from Vice Admiral B.J. Semms, Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., stated that he died of shrapnel wounds on March 9 at the Army's 24th Evacuation Hospital at Lonh Binh, South Vietnam. The earlier message stated that he received a head wound in an explosion while assisting in putting out a fire, on an ammunition barge. SN, Swift, who had been in the Navy since August 8, 1965, had volunteered for a year of duty South Vietnam and was in the Mobile Riverine Force engaged in search and destroy missions in the Mekong Delta. He was the Son of Mrs Swift and John Swift, SN Swift Wilkes attended Central High School and graduated at Hyattsville, Maryland, before enlisting in the Navy. The body will be returned here for Funeral and Burial services.
He served with the Naval Riverine Force on board T-111-5, Task Force 117, RIVRON 11, USNAVFORCES.
He was awarded The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
