John Burke, for whom it is named, on July 12, 1910, after a contested election and extensive litigation resulted in its separation from Ward County. Burke (1859-1937) was a politically successful Democrat in an essential Republican state who served three terms as Governor, 1907-1913, was Treasurer of the United States in the Woodrow Wilson administration and ended his career as justice of the state supreme court, 1924-37.
