Biographies


Mrs. EUGENIE S. BIRKHOLZ,, author, born in Garnavillo, Clayton county, Iowa, in 1853. She is the daughter of Dr. F. Andros, who was the first physician and surgeon, regularly licensed to practice, who settled west of the Mississippi river and north of Missouri. He settled in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1830. Mrs. Birkholz was educated in the school of the Catholic sisters in Benton, Wis., and was in her early life a woman of original thought and sent many literary contributions to the periodicals and papers of the day. In 1881 she was married to John Birkholz, of Chicago, Ill, in which city they both resided, and whence they emigrated to Grand Forks, N. Dak., where she has since made her home. Mrs. Birkholz devotes considerable time to literary work.

WALTER R. BOND, of the twenty-ninth legislative district, was born at Mayville, New York. February 14, 1871. With his parents he moved to Grand Forks county, Dakota territory, in April, 1881. He received his education in the common schools of Grand Forks. In 1899 he moved west to Ward county. He is married and has two sons. He is a republican.

H. A. BRONSON,
(Grand Forks), of the seventh legislative district, was born in Munica, Mich., November 19, 1873, and came to North Dakota in July. 1890. Graduated from the University or North Dakota in 1895, with the degree of M. A., and of the University of Minnesota, with the degree of L. L. B. in 1901. He held the position of lecturer on real property for ten years at the law school of the state university. Was elected to his present position in 1912 as a republican. He is married and has one daughter. He is an attorney at law, and has been engaged in the practice of his profession for twelve years.

CHARLES J. FISK
, associate Justice, was born in Whiteside county, Ill., March 11, 1862. He was educated in the public schools and at the Northern Illinois college at Fulton, and studied law at Morrison, Ill. He came to North Dakota in 1886, and settled at Larimore, where he was admitted to the bar in 1886. He moved to Grand Forks in 1889. He is married and has two children. He has served three terms on the district bench and was elected to the supreme bench as a democrat.

P. L. HJELMSTAD,
Edmore, of the third legislative district, was born near Cannon River Falls, Minn., August 15, 1875. Received his education in the common schools of Minnesota and North Dakota. Came to North Dakota with his parents, May 6, 1882, settling in Grand Forks county. Moved in 1898 to Walsh county where he has engaged in farming. Has held minor positions on school and township boards. He is married and has five children. Was elected representative as a progressive republican.

JOHN S. KYLLO
, of the fifth legislative district, was born near Kenyon., in Goodhue county, Minn., February 20, 1881. His parents came to Dakota territory in the spring of that year. He was educated in the district schools of this state, and later attended the Northwestern Business college and the state university at Grand Forks. His home is at McCanna. He is engaged in farming and has banking interests. He was elected representative in 1910 and re-elected, 1912, as a progressive republican.

WILLIAM V. O'CONNOR,
of the sixth legislative district, was born in Lenark, Ont., Canada, June 34, 1878, and came to this state with his parents twenty-five years ago. He secured his education at St. Bernard's Academy and at the state university, from which institution he graduated in 1896. He is engaged in the banking business. Has served as city auditor two years, and held other minor positions. He is married and has two children. He was elected representative in 1910 and 1912 as a democrat.

EDWIN J. TAYLOR
, superintendent of public instruction, was born at Waddington, N. Y., October 22, 1869. He was educated in the public schools of his native town and at St. Lawrence University. Canton, N. Y., from which he graduated June 11, 1890. In July, 1890, he moved to Grand Forks county, N. D., and engaged in educational work. He was elected county superintendent of schools for that county in 1892, and held the office three successive terms. He was appointed deputy superintendent of public instruction in 1903, which position he held eight years. He is married and has two sons. He was elected to his present position in 1910, and re-elected in 1912, as a republican.

O. O. TRAGETON,
(Northwood), of the fifth legislative district, was born in Northwood. N. D., February 28. 1884. He graduated from the State Normal School, Mayville, in 1905 and received the degree of B. A. from the state university in 1911, and graduated again with the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1912. Was elected to his present position as a republican in 1912. He is married. He has been engaged in the practice of law.

JAMES TURNER, of the sixth district, was born of Scotch parents who were on their way to the United States, September 9, 1847. He was educated in the common schools of Ontario, and came to North Dakota in 1882, settling at Grand Forks. He is married and has two sons. He has never held political office prior to his election as senator as a democrat in 1906, and was re-elected in 1910.
