The
following clips are of Joe Laughlin, who was a mortician in
Benkelman; hence the remark about the flowers in the second story.
These newspaper clippings were donated by LaVella Tomlison:
She thinks Joe was in business in Salina, Kansas before he moved to
Benkelman. Joe Laughlin, was Nellie Laughlin McPherson's brother. They
grew up in Smoky Township, Sherman County Kansas.

MY
NATIVE LAND AND HOW I LOVE IT -- The patriotic fever was
running high when this picture was taken at the Hello-o There radio
show at Carpenter's Cafe on Tuesday of last week. Joe Laughlin, the
home town booster, is intent in his review of civic virtues and praises
of lands and people and opportunities of the Benkelman area. Ted Haas,
the master of ceremonies, had a difficult time shutting Joe off when
the minute period ran past and Joe was apparently just getting wound
up. Speaking without script, Joe did a magnificient job of appraising
the community's virtues -- Benkelman Post Photo. 1956
A handwritten note underneath says: "Did you know your "Unk" was a
speaker besides? I never heard him get "wound up" like this." |

IN
APPRECIATION
The night before they moved to
Beatrice, Joe and Ethel Laughlin received a glowing tribute from the
residents, staff and board of trustees of the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial
Nursing Home. A special poster, made by the residents said, "Thank you,
Joe, for all the beautiful flowers over the years." He also received an
engraved plaque from the Hester Home board, expressing its appreciation
for Joe's many years as a volunteer handyman and friend for Hester Home
residents. The Laughlins, who lived in Benkelman for more than half a
century, are moving to the eastern part of the state to be nearer their
children. (POST Photograph) Benkelman Post 11-4-1987

Jobless Rate Is 1.1 Percent
At 1.1 percent, Dundy County's unemployment rate remains among the
lowest in the southwestern area of the state served by the North Platte
Area Claims Center.

available. McPherson, of which Tryon is the county seat, had zero
unemployment.
McPherson County's labor force totals 238 people. Dundy
County, with a labor force of 1,294 persons, had just 14 persons
receiving jobless benefits in September.
The unemployment rates of other area counties include: Chase,
2.5 percent of 1,949 workers; Hayes, 1.2 percent of 655 workers, and
Hitchcock, 3.8 percent of 1,404 workers.
Statewide, the unemployment rate in September was 3.9 percent.
