The Logan Family
Early Dundy County Residents

This story is developed from information in the 1976 Haigler Book, Who's Who in Nebraska: Dundy County and correspondence with Lois (Logan) Horn who lived in Haigler, Nebraska as a child.  (Read her story)  Lois is the daughter of Lee Logan who worked for Mr. Larned at the State Bank.

The following pictures from the 1976 Haigler Book were scanned and sent to Lois and her responses are recorded along with comments from other sources.

Lois writes:
"When the Nebraska State Banks went broke, we moved to an Ohio farm my parents had inherited.  After one year of disasters, we moved to Omaha and later to the Sandhills on Pine Creek.  (crick in those days.)  In 1936, we came to Seattle where our fortunes turned for the better."

" I remember... the Larned Family, of course, because my dad worked in their bank and kept in touch with them  almost until his death."

"Fred Crone's bank went broke in the 1929 crash and the Crone's moved to California.  I visited them in WW II when I was in the Navy."

Mrs. Lee (Rozella) Logan, Linda, (sp: Lynda) L. W. (Bill) Logan, Lee Logan, Mrs. L. W. (Ruth) Logan
On December 17, 2008, Lois writes:
"The only living relative in my brother  Bill's family  is Lynda,  Bill's daughter, now 52.  She is in the photo I took at the airport in 1966 when I concocted a trip to Hawaii for her parents and mine.  My brother, Bill, had fought a 5-year battle with colon cancer and was headed for his last year of life. It was just so sad and gloomy that I could not stand it, so I sent them off to Hawaii for a great
vacation.  Bill died at 46.  His daughter is still close to me.  She works as a dental office receptionist and bookkeeper, and is a very attractive, gregarious woman.  Her mother died in 1993 after Lynda  cared for her many months.  Her mother, Ruth, was 71 at her death.

From a note in December 2008
"My Dad, Lee  C. Logan, died in 1970  at age 82 of old age and my mother, Rozella, died in 1977 at age 89 of old age.   Mom's story "Rozella" is  in the  Kansas Collection at the U. of Kansas."

From a note written in November 2008

"...my "Rozella" l00-page book resulted partly  from notes Mom left around her house, but mainly from a couple of tapes we did when she was around 80.  I just had her over to our house and had my family there to make it easier for her to spin her story.  Not really necessary, though, because she was a great storyteller.

"... she said she had one regret:  that she had never completed the story of her life as a child on the Kansas homestead (Norton County). I promised her I would write the story.     Later, I gathered up the notes she left and transcribed the tapes (on a Selectric typewriter!) and just quoted her story, adding a few fill-ins that I knew about.  After I self-published in Copy-Mart fashion, I sent copies to the University of Kansas, Kansas Collection.  I may have sent it to several other places.  The Seattle Public Library was delighted to get it and the library bound it in a professional book binding."

Katye (Hickman) Logan

Katye E. Logan  taught school in and near Haigler.  Moved to Benkelman when she was elected County Superintendent of schools in 1930.  Held the position for twenty-two years.  Died in 1953 at age 67.

In December 2008, Lois writes:
My aunt Katye, Earl's wife died in her 60's after a very productive, community service life in education in Dundy County.  My uncle Earl died awhile before that."

In November 2008, Lois writes:  "
Katye Logan was Superintendent of Dundy County Schools and she was my first teacher."

Blanche B. Logan taught school in Nebraska for eight years.  Retired in 1967 after thirty-eight years of teaching.
Blanche, my cousin, never married.  She was a devoted educator and taught in Denver and Golden,  Colorado, as well as in Nebraska. Blanche and Florence died around the late 1960's or early 70's.

Mr. and Marshall Logan Cannon, Denver, Data Process Supervisor, Karman Western Wear.

Gregory Cannon and David Cannon, Great-grandsons of Kayte and Earl Logan
I suppose  Florence's son, Marshall, is still living, as well as his offspring.  They may even live in the Pacific Northwest, so who knows? They may look me up someday.  I have never met them.

Orval and Florence (Logan) Anderson, Denver.  He works for Thompson Pipe and Steel.  She is a tax consultant for H&R Block.
But I last saw Blanche and Florence in Denver in 1961.  We stopped at   Florence's home on our way for an assignment by Boeing Wichita, KS.
My uncle   Gene and aunt Pearl Logan died in the 1960's, I believe.  She preceded him in death, as they say in obits.  Their four children, Don, Jack, Vance and Helen Louise, all served as officers in the Navy or Army in WW II, as did I and my two brothers.  My brothers, Bill and Bob were in the WW II Army and I was a Navy intelligence officer is D.C. (Japanese translator).  The four of Gene and Pearl's children have been deceased for a number of years.  The three sons were football stars in Nebraska in the 1930's.  They graduated from Hastings College, which my brother, Bob, attended for a year or two.  He had to quit to help support our family.

Mr. & Mrs. Glen Logan, Mrs. Hazel Pierson,
Jean, Marjorie, Bruce and Murray Pierson

Mark, Murray, Kerri, Hazel (Logan) Pierson
My aunt, Hazel Logan Pierson, lives independently to age 93 in Seattle.  Her only child, Murray Logan Pierson, died about seven years ago.  His three children live in the Seattle area.  Her husband, Ernie, died in his early 60's, I think.  Maybe his  late 50s.

J. B. (Bud) Logan Family
Mrs. May (Clegg) Logan, Marilyn, Gerald, Jackie, J. B.
He was a pharmascist in Haigler for many years.  They built the house (Stanley Zuege residence) in 1926.  Mrs. Logan died at their home in Seattle in 1971.
My uncle Bud and aunt May's twins, Marilyn and Gerrald, died just this year.  She, in January, and Gerrald in September.  They are buried in a grave site where Bud and May are buried.  Marilyn and Gerrald were 77. (Gerrald is pronounced with a hard G and there are two r's)  Their sister, Jacqueline, died at the age of 62 in Alameda, California.  She was born in 1925, I believe.  She was two years younger than I.   May died at age 74 and Bud died at age 82.  Jackie's  husband survives and is an active 88 or so.  They had two daughters, Joellyn and Charlene, who live in Las Vegas. Neither of the daughters has children.  Jackie's married name was Kasdorf.  Marilyn's married  name was Manning.  She had two surviving  children, a son and a daughter, and lost an infant of SIDS when she and her husband, Derrald were stationed in the US Army in Japan during the Korean War..

Gerrald Logan had two children, John and Gerrald D.  John and wife Sherrie have one child, Aubrey.

Aubrey is an accomplished jazz singer who has studied and performed in New York, Paris and other cities.  John and Sherrie, her parents,  are high school music teachers and John served many years as vice-principal in secondary schools in the Seattle area.  Gerrald is a supermarket manager.

Note:  It is interesting that down through the generations, those whose married surname was not Logan, gave the name "Logan" to their offspring as a middle name.  For example, Murray Pierson's middle name was Logan.  His son, Mark, has Logan as a middle name.  My son is named William Logan Horn and our granddaughter is Claire Logan Horn.
Read more about Lois Logan Horn Of my immediate family, I am the only survivor. of my generation.      Brother Bill died at 46.    Bob died at age 86 in 2008.  The only cousins about whom I have no knowledge are Glen Logan's two older children.  I think their names were Bruce and Jean and they lived in Denver as children.  We have had no contact.  I never met them, but wish I had.  The youngest child died at age 5 of leukemia.
