Population of Dundy 1880

 In 1880, Dundy County was still a part of Hitchcock County and not organized, but there were about 37 people residing in the area now known as Dundy County.  The following was taken from The Haigler Centennial Book – 1976, p. 28

 

“The following information was obtained from a large map of Nebraska loaned to us by Mrs. Rose Watt.

 

The map was published by the State Journal Company, Lincoln, Nebraska in 1880.  Dundy County was then unorganized and was Dundy precinct of Hitchcock county.  This map shows a post office at the Forks of the Republican River called “Elmer” and the population of Dundy precinct at that time was 37.

 

On July 10, 1924 James Morning made out the following list of thirty of the living in Dundy precinct early in 1880.  They were:  Jake Haigler, Charles Hickman, Tom Ashton, (at that time) James Morris, John Scott, Lon Scott, Charley Ray, Frank Badger, Dunlap Jack, (name unknown) James Morning, Abe Vancycle, Pete Calvin, Elmer Miller, Good Eye Cooper, Jeff Gallagher, Mrs. Elmer Miller, Tom Hill, Newt Hall, William Holcomb, Josh Jones, Billy Welch, Frank Pay, C. M. Conner, Jim Grey, Peg Richards, John Delay, John King, James Nesbit, Dick Davenport and Ed Taylor.”
