Ernest Franklin Pennell

Ernest Franklin Pennell, son of Franklin and Bessie Hedke Pennell, was born February 27, 1903, at Trenton, Nebraska, and passed away January 13, 1983, at the Dundy County Hospital at the age of 79 years and 10 months. At a very young age they moved to Haigler, Nebraska, where they farmed for some time.

While living here, his mother passed away, leaving him at the age of 6. Ten children were left for his father to care for, but, with the help of the older children, they stayed on the farm.

On June 1, 1926, at Trenton, Nebraska, Ernest was united in marriage to Mildred Rhodes Owens. To this union two children were born, one daughter, Helen, and a son, Eugene. They also had one step-son whom they raised from the age of 3. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Haigler and moved to Benkelman in 1950 where Ernest worked on the Burlington Railroad until his retirement in 1968.

During their years on the farm, Ernest worked hard and did various jobs during the Depression to support his family. He was an excellent corn picker, picking much for the neighbors to help them and to be able to keep the children in school. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed his yard and garden. He

always had a nice garden and a yard of beautiful flowers. He was a kind and loving husband and father. In 1976, he and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one daughter, Helen Hoff, four brothers, Fred, Floyd, Lavern and Clarence, and four sisters, Anna Stute, Violet White, Alta and Opal.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two sons, Eugene and wife, Violet, and Herb and his wife, Lillian, all of Sioux City, Iowa; one son-in-law, Harold Hoff, of Pueblo, Colorado; one sister, Ethel Bowker, and her husband, Nile, of Oroville, California; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday, January 17, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. in the Jones Funeral Chapel at Benkelman with Rev. Robert Sander officiating. Organist was Mary Baney. She accompanied Carol and Robert Sander with the selections: "Have Thine Own Way Lord" and "Rock Of Ages."

Bearers were W.C. Bradley, Lester Donohue, Royce Anderson, Hugh Wall, Dennis Pinkerton and Willie Wall.

Interment was in the Benkelman Cemetery with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Benkelman.
