of alliance and Miss Merle Clark
of Elk Creek were married Saturday
evening at the court house
by Judge Walden.
Mr. Clayont and Miss Clark
were refused a marriage license
in the county court of Lancaster
County last Friday, because the age of the young
man was given as 17 by himself
and his father, and the Nebraska
law fixes 18 as the minumum age at which a man
may
marry.
The couple spent several
days in the Lincoln City jail
after being taken from Lincol Hotel where they were registered
as man and wife.
According to the Beatraice
Sun, Mr. Clayton gave his age
as 22 and Miss Clark as 19,
at Beatrice. Miss Clark's
age was given as 17 here.
The couple were advised
to go from Lincoln to Council
Bluffs, the Iowa statutes allowing
the marriage of a man 16
and a girl 14.
