In 1931, Russell Darnold with help from his brother Francis bought
the shoe repair shop along with machinery in Wymore, NE.
At this time, the
Burlington Rail Road had the largest round house, black shops and, wrecker
services, weather and coal services and passenger trains and they were a major
employer in Wymore.
Russell felt that Wymore would be a good place to repair
shoes and raise his family. During World II , Russell worked long hours keeping
people’s shoes repaired. Shoes were rationed and he was only able to get limited
amounts of leather and rubber heels. The shop was open for 23 years, closing in
1954.
The Darnold family consisted of wife, Opal and their children Betty
Jean, Wendell and Marilyn. All three children graduated from Wymore High School.
The Darnold family attended the Methodist church where they were active
members.
My other Gage County relatives are my late grandparent's Archie and Clara
Anderson and family.
My Uncle David Anderson, Odell.
