Blue Star Memorial Marker
Highway 11 Dedicated With Blue Star Memorial Marker Sunday
Sunday, July 31, a dream came true for the Green Thumbs Flower and Garden Club. A beautiful Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker was dedicated at the Wayside Park near the Scotia “Y,” which the Garden Club has cleaned and landscaped for some time. The club purchased the marker for $750 in 1987. It has been stored at Wegner & VanSlyke Implements until the dedication of Highway No. 11.
Honored guests present were Mrs. Clayton Hansen of Grand Island, President, Federated Garden Club of Nebraska; Lola Leu of Hayes Center, Blue Star Memorial Chairman of Nebraska; Al Novotny of Elba, District 6 Commander; David Weeks, Commander of Rueben Beck Post No. 150, also Legionnaires, Don Thompson, Virgil Barnes, Don Hughes, Loren Steffen, Gene Beck, Jimmie Jensen and Millard Vlach; American Legion Auxiliary members present were Mrs. Don Hughes, president, Mrs. Millard Vlach, Mrs. Dale May, Lornie Johnson, Mrs. Loren Steffen and Mrs. Jimmie Jensen.
Other Legion posts represented included Ralph Rich Post No. 285 and American Legion Auxiliary members, North Loup; Charles Martin Post No. 186, Greeley; VFW Post No. 5433, Greeley County, Commander Pat Scott; Jim Ryan, Jr., Greeley County American Legion Commander.
Other honored guests present were Sen. Carson Roger, Dist. No. 41 and Al Groom, Maintenance Superintendent Department, both of Ord.
Rev. Wayne Alloway gave the dedication after Lola Leu presented the marker to the highway department. Grooms spoke briefly and accepted the marker.
Jim Malmstrom, Allen Keep, and Mrs. Phyllis Freeman, representing the Scotia Village Board, the Scotia Community Club and the Garden Club, spoke briefly of the accomplishments of the garden club and the Scotia community.
Members of the Scotia Community Club and the Village Board erected the marker.
Also taking part in the program were Wilbur Medberry, Melvin Shoemaker and the Boy Scouts.
Following the dedication the garden club hosted a reception at the Scotia United Methodist Church in the fellowship hall.
Garden club members present were Phyllis Freeman, Meta Keep, Esther Bussell, Margaret Williams, Ethel Yax, Wanda Essman and Ellen Lincoln. Margaret Goldfish was unable to attend.
