Ann Chapman

Mrs. Hiram Chapman died Thursday morning, October 9 at her late residence near Bower, the cause of her death being heart trouble.

Mrs. Chapman was born in Indiana, near Indianapolis and at the time of her death was 72 years and ten months old. She came to Nebraska in 1883, settling with her husband on the farm where she lived at the time of her death. She leaves three sons and two daughters and her husband. The sons are Charles, Albert and Leonard, all residents of this county. One daughter, Mrs. Fogleburg, lives at Wymore and the other, Mrs. Bundy at Colorado Springs.

The funeral was held Friday at the residence, the remains being interred in the Bower cemetery.

Hiram Chapman

One of Jefferson county's best citizens passed away Tuesday night at his home one mile north of Bower. Hiram Chapman came here in 1883 and was known as a man of his own opinions, one of high character and lofty purpose.

He was born in Shenango county, New York over 75 years ago; moved from there to Peru, Ind in 1850 and from there to Nebraska. He leaves three sons, Geo. A., Leonard and Charles, and two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Bundy of Colorado Springs and Mrs. Chas Fogelburg of Wymore. The latter was present at the funeral.

Death resulted from a complication of diseases incident to old age. The remains were interred Thursday in the Bower cemetery.

Nellie Chapman

Mrs. Walter T. Chapman of Powell, Nebr., passed away Friday, March 7, 1952 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Potts of Fairbury, where she had made her home for a number of years, having suffered a stroke in May 1943.

Nellie Helvey, daughter of Whitman and Rachel Helvey, was born at Powell, Nebr., August 24, 1873.

On August 4, 1898, she married Walter T. Chapman, and to them one son, Ralph, was born. She spent her entire life in the Powell community.

Surviving are her husband, two children, Ralph of Fairfield, Nebr., and Mrs. Grace Brandt of Powell; one sister, Mrs. Emma Veith of Fairbury, and six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Traum's chapel with Rev. W.H. Clark officiating. Burial in the Fairbury cemetery.

Walter Chapman

Walter T. Chapman, whose life was spent in the Bower-Powell community, passed away in a Fairbury hospital Jan. 16, 1958, after several months illness, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 20 days.

Walter Truman Chapman, son of Leonard and Emma Kreider Chapman, was born at Bower, Neb., Oct 26, 1881.

On Aug. 4, 1898 he married Nellie Helvey of Powell, and for 20 years they farmed in that community. In 1918 they came to Fairbury where he worked as a brakeman for the Rock Island railroad for two years. They returned to Powell where they resided their remaining years. Much of the time he worked on county highway maintenance.

His wife died March 7, 1952, and three brothers, Ray, Harvey and Ernie, preceded him in death.

In recent months he became a member of the Fairbury Methodist church.

Surviving are two children, Ralph Chapman of Fairfield and a step-daughter, Grace Brandt of Fairbury; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and two sisters, Cora of Idaho and Sally of California.

Funeral services were Sunday afternoon at Traum's chapel with Rev. A.W. Johnson, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in the Fairbury cemetery. Pallbearers were George Orth, Owen McGrady, Walter Schweer, Walter Knispel, Bill Webster and Lee Brown.
