Lou Christiansen
Niobrara River
guardian dies.
Was a husband, a teacher, a
conservationist and a founder of Sparks. Niobrara River canoe outfitter and
conservationist Lou Christiansen died Monday. Christiansen, 67, collapsed while
mowing the lawn at his Norfolk home Monday afternoon, said Bruce Kennedy of
Malcolm. "He was a real conservationist and a real friend. We're all kind of sad
today," said Kennedy. Christiansen, a former Fremont High School social studies
teacher, outfitted Niobrara River float trips out of Fremont for many years.
In
1985 he bought the village of Sparks, which he dubbed the "canoe capital"
of Nebraska. Sparks, an unincorporated village with a general store, post office
and a house, was the base of operations for Dryland Aquatics. Christiansen and
his wife, Jan, operated the business for many years before selling it in 1998 to
Ed and Louise Heinert.
But Christiansen did more than just shuttle canoeists to
and from the Niobrara River. He was one of the founding members of Save the
Niobrara, a grass-roots organization that led a successful effort to stop the
Norden Dam Project. Christiansen also was active in the effort to get federal
protection for a 76-mile stretch of the Niobrara River. It was added to the
nation's wild and scenic river system in 1991 and is one of the most popular
canoeing rivers in the state. Getting the designation wasn't easy. Local
landowners objected to federal intervention, fearing scenic river designation
would take away their livelihoods. Kennedy recalled that Christiansen maintained
a "real cool head" during those heated times. "He was a voice of reason in a
time when that was needed," recalled Kennedy. "We always thought he was a really
super individual."
Christiansen was the founder and current chairman of Friends
of Niobrara, a group that was established later to promote the river's scenic
qualities and to support the National Park Service and other groups working to
protect the unique river corridor. "Lou was a very active environmentalist,"
Kennedy said. "He was active on the state board of Audubon Nebraska and put in a
lot of volunteer time at Rowe Sanctuary - driving people out to the (sandhill)
cranes," said Kennedy.
Services are pending at Home for Funerals in Norfolk.
Kennedy said a memorial service may be held in Fremont and some of
Christiansen's ashes may be spread on the Niobrara River at a later date.
