Along The North Platt
A Hundred Thousand Dollars Damage Done by Prairie Fires
North Platte, Neb.,
April 10 – A disastrous prairie fire broke out south of Sutherland in this
county.
The loss will probably reach
$100,000. It is claimed the fire was
started by a passing engine. Never has
such a disastrous prairie fire devastated the Platte
valley. Everything for a distance of 25
miles is in ruins, and the width reaches from three to four miles.
The fire started south of Sutherland shortly
before noon and swept everything
before it, traveling at from 30 to 50 miles and hour. Shortly after 12
o’clock it struck the City of North Platte,
where only by almost superhuman efforts the town was saved. The fire companies responded to the alarm as
soon as it was known the fire was raging west of the city, and when they
reached the outskirts of the city a fire was upon them and they fought them
back writhing the water limits.
Almost
everything beyond the water limits was licked up in a few minutes by the
flames. The farmers and ranchers in this
neighborhood will lose everything.

Gives Life For Her Mother
Sutherland, Neb.,
(AP) - Miss Dorothy Metcalf, 25, of Sutherland, pushed her mother to safety but was struck and killed by an automobile last night before she could get off the highway. The young woman died almost instantly. She and her mother were walking along the highway when the young woman saw a car approaching. County Attorney S. S. Diedrichs said the young woman pushed her mother, Mrs. Ralph Metcalf, from the road but was unable to scramble to safety herself.
The car, driven by W. A. Brommer of Chadron, swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the women, Diedrichs said, but the young woman was struck down.
