LOUP COUNTY NEBRASKA
MADISON SQUARE SCHOOL

MADISON SQUARE SCHOOL
BY: MYRTLE HALL

Edd Cook donated the plot for the school from his homestead with the stipulation that the land revert back to the homestead if and when the school was dissolved.  The first school house was built of sod.  Miss Gertrude Dilsaver, (daughter of W.H. Dilsaver), at the age of 16, took the teacher's examination successfully, passed the exam, and was issued a certificate January 17, 1885 (signed by County Supt.  Mrs. Addie Van Antwerp) to teach for six months in District 11.

At this time the enrollment was 45 to 50, ages 5 to 21 or over.  Edd, Burt, and Osce Cram, Vina Hyde and Angie Sears were some of the older students.  The transfer of the plot was filed by the Clerks office in 1887.  The school was in operation until 1963 when the district consolidated with Taylor.
