Mary Jane Hamilton

Mrs. Hamilton’s Funeral

Mary Jane Hamilton, wife of Thomas Hamilton of Richfield, Sarpy county, was buried in the Barker family lot at Prospect Hill cemetery, this city, on Thursday. The funeral cortege was driven across country a distance of fifteen miles from Richfield to the cemetery here.

Dr. E. Crombie Smith of the First Methodist church and Rev. Charles W. Savidge of the People’s church drove to Richfield in the morning and conducted the services at the family home. Both clergymen spoke briefly. The services were attended by a large number of old citizens of Douglas and Sarpy counties.

Mrs. Mary Jane Hamilton was the daughter of Joseph Barker, the celebrated lecturer, and a sister of George E. Barker of this city. She was born in England and was brought to this country in 1856 by her parents. For a number of years she was the traveling companion of her father on his lecture tours. In 1871 she became the wife of Thomas Hamilton, who is now one of the wealthiest men in Sarpy county. One child, a son, died when 6 years of age, and Mr. Hamilton is the only surviving member of the family.
