Karl Mailand

Mother Visits Morgue; Finds Victim Not Son
Dr. and Mrs. Percy Hunter First Told Their Son, Russell, Died in Car Crash Near Gretna

When Karl Mailand, University student, was killed in an automobile accident Friday night near Gretna, his companion, Jesse Fetterman, dazed after the accident, kept mumbling the name of Russell Hunter, son of Dr. and Mrs. Percy Hunter, 2869 Bauman avenue, another university student who had at the last minute cancelled plans to accompany the two to Omaha.

Gretna officials understood Fetterman to say the dead boy was Russell Hunter and so notified the Hunter family.

Dr. and Mrs. Hunter hurried by auto to the Gretna morgue. Drawing back the pall over the dead boy’s figure, expecting to gaze on the face of her son, Mrs. Hunter discovered the mistake.

The Hunter lad came to Omaha by train later.
