Hiram Pickard Dead

Accidentally Shot at Sarpy Mills
Attended Castellar School

Hiram Pickard, a 16-year-old boy living with his parents near Seventeenth and Oak streets, died last evening at 9 o’clock at Sarpy Mills, from the effects of a gun shot wound accidentally received at noon while out hunting. He had left home on Friday afternoon in company with John Newton, a companion of about his own age, and had walked to his grandfather’s place, which is the general store at Sarpy Mills.

About 12 o’clock yesterday, with his grandfather’s rifle, he was standing on a boat landing built out over the water just above the mill dam, when he slipped and the gun stock was thrown over the edge of the landing, in some way catching the hammer and causing a discharge of the rifle. The large caliber bullet entered the boy’s stomach on the left side, causing a fearful wound. He lingered for six hours. Medical attendance was of no avail. His parents were informed of the accident, and last night they remained at the mills, intending to return home with the body this morning.

Hiram was the eldest son of Lorenzo Pickard, until recently the proprietor of a meat market at Nineteenth and Vinton streets. He was in the eighth grade at Castellar school, and was bright and well liked by everyone.
