Special Dispatch to The World-Herald
Gretna, Neb., Aug. 27 - August Rightmeyer, the first citizen to settle in Gretna when it was started nearly a half century ago, died last week after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Thursday.
He was born in Holstein Fresian, Germany, in 1848 and came to America in 1862. He came west in a covered wagon.
He founded Gretna Remedy company and made great quantities of medicines from plants and herbs. He was known as a "doctor," and traveled extensively with his medicine wagon, visiting not only towns in Nebraska but those in neighboring states. Although he was the father of 11 children, only one, Mrs. Rose Rishel of Omaha, survives him.
