Incorporated cities
Boulder City -
Originally built by the Bureau of Reclamation as housing for workers who were building Hoover Dam.
It was designed by landscape architect Saco Rienk DeBoer.
Alcohol sales and all forms of gambling were prohibited in the city.
The Bureau did not relinquish control of the city until 1958.
Boulder City was officially incorporated on January 4, 1960.
First Mayor was Robert N. Broadbent.
Henderson -
5 miles southeast of Las Vegas
Thia area was first known as Jericho Heights.
In 1918, the only habitation in what is now known as the City of Henderson was that of R. B. Jefferson, who had
a ranch in the area.
Named in 1944, after the late Senator Charles B. Henderson.
Officially incorporated on April 16, 1953
First Mayor was Dr. Jim French
Occupies the southern rim of the Las Vegas Valley stretching east of Boulder Highway to just east of Interstate
15.
Features include level desert; access to the Colorado River, Lake Mead, and Sloan Canyon National Conservation
area; along with Black Mountain and the River and McCullough Mountains.
Las Vegas (County seat)-
Started as a stopover on the pioneer trails to the west.
It was a staging point for all the mines in the surrounding area
It was established in 1905, officially became a city March 16, 1911.
Named by Spaniards in the Antonio Armijo party, who used the water in the area while heading north and west along
the Old Spanish Trail from Texas.
In the 1800s, areas of the Las Vegas Valley contained artesian wells that supported extensive green areas or Meadows
(Vega in Spanish), hence the name Las Vegas.
Las Vegas was part of Lincoln County until 1909.
Las Vegas as Established as a railroad town on May 15, 1905.
Legalization of gambling took place on March 19, 1931.
North Las Vegas -
Part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area.
Location of Nellis Air Force Base.
Mesquite-
Adjacent to the Arizona state line and is 77 miles northeast of Las Vegas

Cal-Nev-Ari - Near the state's southernmost
point. Named has a portmanteau of California, Nevada, and Arizona.
Cottonwood Cove -situated at the banks
of Lake Mohave on the Nevada-Arizona border. 14 miles east of historic Searchlight. 45 minutes north of Laughlin
and an hour away from Las Vegas.

Indian Springs- named for the artesian
spring that provides the area with water. Over the years the spring has been used by Native Americans, the railroad
and later as an artist colony.
Jean - small community that is located
on I-15 about 5 miles from the Nevada-California state line
Laughlin - The town is named for founder Don Laughlin, an Owatonna, Minnesota
native who owns the Riverside Resort and Casino.
Located on the Colorado River 94 miles (152.3 km) south of Las Vegas. Directly
across the river from Laughlin is Bullhead City, Arizona.
Logandale - Located on the north end of
Lake Mead; named after Robert Logan
Moapa Town
Moapa Valley
Mount Charleston -Named for Mount Charleston. The town is in a valley of the Spring Mountains to the northwest of Las Vegas
Mountain Springs
Nelson also called Nelson Landing - Nelson is on the Nevada side of Lake Mohave,
about 16 miles north of Cottonwood Cove by water. Located in the Eldorado Canyon.
It's about 25 miles from Boulder City by road. One of the biggest mining booms in state history occurred near here,
in the El Dorado Canyon.
Gold and silver were discovered here around 1859
Overton - on the north end of Lake Mead,
in Moapa Valley
Paradise- Outside of the Las Vegas, Nevada city limits, it contains most of
the Las Vegas Strip.
Primm - often called Primm Valley. Positioned straddling Interstate 15 where
it crosses the border between California and Nevada. It sits at the edge of Ivanpah Dry Lake.
Sandy Valley- located in the Mesquite
Valley in southwest part of the county. Bordered on the East by the southern extension of the Spring Mountains.
On the West by the California state line. It began in the 1800s as the five mining communities of: Kingston, Sandy,
Ripley, Mesquite, and Platina.
Searchlight-was an important gold mining town of southern Nevada in the early
part of the 20th century. Population was 576 in 2000.
Sloan
Spring Valley
Summerlin South- seen on maps as South Summerlin. Sides on the western edge
of Las Vegas and adjacent to the Red Rock National Conservation Area.
It is so named because it is a southward extension of the master-planned community of Summerlin.
Sunrise Manor
Whitney (Formerly East Las Vegas)
Winchester-Part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Post office is Las Vegas.
Sits in the east-central part of the Las Vegas Valley. To the North it borders the City of Las Vegas. To the west
and south is the township of Paradise, and to the east is Sunrise Manor.
Federal Land
Creech AFB -
American air base located in Indian Springs, Nevada, about 35 miles north of Las Vegas.
It is named after General Wilbur L. “Bill” Creech, who is considered the Father of the Thunderbirds for his early
support of the program.
It was previously known as Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Air Field while it was a part of Nellis Air Force
Base.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest -
The only U.S. National Forest located in the State of Nevada.
Size is 6.3 million acres. It is the largest National Forest of the United States outside of Alaska.
It has 10 Ranger Districts scattered across the many mountain ranges in Nevada. From the Santa Rosa Range in the
north to the Spring Mountains near Las Vegas in the south.
A small part of the forest is actually in eastern California, in the areas around Bridgeport and Markleeville.
Lake Mead National Recreation Area-
Located in southern Nevada and northwestern Arizona.
The centerpieces of the National Recreation Area are it's two large reservoirs: Lake Mead and Lake Mohave.
Three of America's four desert ecosystems: Mojave desert, the Great Basin desert, and the Sonoran Desert, meet
in Lake Mead NRA.
Originally called Boulder Dam Recreation Area, dating from October 13, 1936. The name was changed to Lake Mead
National Recreation Area on August 11, 1947.
The Hoover Dam, which was completed in 1936 creating Lake Mead, is located within Lake Mead NRA
Mount Charleston Wilderness Area -
Located west of Las Vegas in the southern part of the state of Nevada in the western United States.
The Mount Charleston Wilderness Area extends across the entire Spring Mountains Range, including the highest point;
Charleston Peak,
Nellis AFB -
United States Air Force base.
Located on the northeast side of Las Vegas.
The base is named for William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas resident and P-47 pilot who died in action during the
Battle of the Bulge.
Spring Mountains National Recreation Area-
U.S. National Recreation Area, administered by the U.S. Forest Service, and lies west of Las Vegas.
The (SMNRA) is a part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It adjoins the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
