Edward Barrett, Helper, Meets Horrible Death Near Ely, Another Injured
GROUND TO DEATH IN SMELTER MILL
ELY. Nov. Jan. 5., Edward Barrett, a machinist helper, was ground to fragments in
the new Huntington mill of the Steptoe Valley smelter at McGill yesterday.
E. P. Fitzgerald, foreman of the section escaped with severe cuts about the head
and his body badly bruised. Barrett and Fitzgerald had thrown off the power from
the mill and entered it to make repair when the power clutch slipped, and in
a second the mill was in motion. Fitzgerald started to climb for the top,
knowing that outside assistance was not to be had. He reached safety
after being badly battered, Barrett had no chance whatever, the machinery
catching him and dragging him to a terrible death.
