The township of New Durham, located in Strafford County, was incorporated and given full town privileges on 7 December 1762. Located in the northern portion of the county, Major Thomas Tash, a soldier of both the French and Revolutionary wars, was authorized to call the first town meeting

The town was settled to some extent by people from Durham, hence its name. The Colonial Assembly in 1721, sitting at Portsmouth, voted to cut a road from Cocheco [Dover] to Winnipishoky Pond [Lake Winnipisaukee]. This road, which passes through New Durham, became known as the Bay Road, and to this day continues to be thus known in deeds and boundaries Consisting of an area six miles square and of a rhomboid shape, the town was marked off into two divisions having 100 lots of 100 acreS each in each division. In the laying out of the lots, the highways between the ranges were to be four rods wide and between the lots two rods wide, and as was required “all white pine trees fit for His Majesty’s use for masting ye Royal navy.. .reserved”.

Elder Joseph Boody was the minister from 1810 through 1851 and perhaps longer. His father, Zachariah, moved from Madbury to New Durham in 1769. Zachanah was a good friend of Elder Benjamin Randal, and it is said that the first organizational meeting of the Free Will Baptist Church was held in the east front room of Zachariah’s house on 30 June 1780. The following vital records are transcribed from the microfilm version of the State Copy of the original town records. These State Copies were a WPA Project in the 1930’s. Not included herein are town meeting minutes warnings out, tavern licenses, strays, and matters of that nature.

The earliest records were recorded in Volume "A" which covered the period 1765-1803 and Volume "B" which covered the period 1803-1837.

The page notations given show the page number of the State copy as "new" and that of the original record as "old." When either the new or old page number changes within a given entry, it is noted within the text of that entry.
