The first occurence of the name, ELY, in the history of Charlestown, is in the report of Capt. Phineas Stevens of his celebrated defense of Fort 4, against Gen. Debeline & his large force of French & Indians on the 4th, 5th & 6th of April 1747.

In this report he says: "though we had thousands of guns shot at us, we had but two men slightly wounded, John Brown and Joseph Ely." (see p. 37)

The next person of the name was Joseph H. Ely who was appointed jail-keeper at Charlestown by the Vermont authorities in 1781. Which position he continued to hold while the township remained under the jurisdiction of Vermont. See account of Col. Enoch Hale's attempt to break jail - p. 171.

What time Mr. Joseph Ely came to Charlestown has not been ascertained. He was a soldier in the Revolution. He m. (1) Hannah ____, who died Oct 5, 1790. Children:

1. Calvin Ely who m. Oct 16, 1814, Elizabeth Healy.

1. Dolly Ann Ely.
2. Hannah Ely m. Jan 26, 1836 Frederick S. Hodgkins.
3. Isaac Ely died when a child.
4. Elizabeth Ely.

2. Guy Ely who m. Nancy ____.

Children:
1. George Warner Ely b. June 12, 1808.

He m. (2) Merinda Hassam.

3. Prudence Ely.

4. Abigail Ely who m. James Milliken on Oct 16, 1814.

Joseph H. Ely m. (2) Nov. 9, 1800, Relief Stone.

5. Epaphroditus Ely who m. Elizabeth Evans, dau of Peter & Emma (Walker) Evans.

Children:
1. Elizabeth Stone Ely who m. Roswell Smith of Hadley, Mass.
2. Louisa Walker Ely who m. Dec 1, 1847, Cotton G. Nash & had:

1. Allan Ely Nash b. Nov 7, 1849.
2. Samuel Gaylord Nash b. June 13, 1853.
3. Edwin C. Nash b. Dec 27, 1869.

3. Allan Evans Ely who m. Lois Brewster, dau of Jonathan Brewster of Northampton, Mass. He was killed on the railroad in Georgia in 1858. He left 3 children:

1. Harry A. Ely
2. Esther Brewster Ely
3. Louis Walker Ely who d. Aug 22, 1859.


Gabriel Ely brother of Joseph H. Ely, married & lived in Charlestown. He had children named Abigail, Simon, Slumon, Calvin, Samuel and Villo Ely.
