Capt. John Metcalf was desc. from Rev. Leonard Metcalf of Norwich, Norwich County, ENG Rector of Norwich Cathedral for many yrs prior to 1616. Michael Metcalf, his son thru whom this line is desc'd. In 1635 he became a dissenter and was forthwith accused of heresy. His two accusers died and he escaped conviction and was forced to fly from his country with his wife and children and go to New England, taking ship from London Sep 17, 1636 but stormy seas forced the ship to Plymouth (in old ENG) They finally too ship and sailed Apr l5, 1637 arriving at Boston, Mass. June 17, 1637 with wife and nine child-ren and a servant. Michael Metcalf (above) was b. at Norwich, Norfolk County, England in l585 and died in Dedham MA 1664. His wife, Sarah (surname unknown) to whom he was married Oct 16, 1616 was born June 17, l593 died Nov 30, 1644.

Michael and Sarah Metcalf had eleven children, nine of which were born in Norwich, ENG and two in Dedham, MA after arriving in this country. Michael Metcalf, Jr. the 3d child b. Aug 20, 1620 m. Jan l4, 1644 Mary Fair-banks and died in Dedham Mar 27, 1654. His wife who was the dau of John Fairbanks of Stafford, ENG d. at Dedham Feb l2,1673. By this marriage there were five children through the youngest, of whom, Eleazer, the line of decent is traced.

Eleazer Metcalf was b. Mar 26, 1652 and m. Meletiah Fisher Apr 9, 1684 b. May l, 1667. He d. Aug ll,1742 and she d. Aug 20, 1742. They had ten children. Ebenezer Metcalf their 4th child, b. Jan 8, 169l m. 173l Martha Rockwood dau of Benjamin Rockwood b.1700 at Rutland, MA. He d. 175l and she in 1787. They had five children. Samuel Metcalf their 3d child b. Apr 26, 1739 m. 1762 Hannah Richardson dau of Thomas Rich-ardson of Leicester, Ireland. where she was born Apr l0, 1743. He d.June l3,1785 and she d. at Corinth, Orange County, VT in 18l2. They lived in Oakham, MA. They had twelve children of whom John Metcalf was their 6th child and Betsy (or Elizabeth) Metcalf the 9th child. They settled at Charlestown, NH.

John Metcalf was born at Oakham, MA He removed to Charlestown, NH and was a farmer. He m. Roby Converse, dau of John and Kezia (Nichols) Converse on Apr l4, 1796. Their children were:

Hon. Ralph Metcalf labored with his father upon the farm until Aug. 1818, when owing to lameness of his limbs saught a profession. He attended Chester VT Academy and entered 18l9 Dartmouth thru 182l and accepted a profess-orhsip in Capt Alden Partridge's Literary, Scientific and Military Academy at Norwich, VT for one year and then returned and grad. Dartmouth 1823. In 1825 he joined the office of the Hon. George Upham of Claremont, NH thru to 1826, when admitted to the bar. He lst pract-ised at Newport, NH until 1828 thence to the state of NY in copartnership with Judge Waterman of Binghamton, NY He returned to NH in 1830 settling at Claremont and in 183l elected Sec. of State. In 1855 a political party styled "The Know Nothing or American Party" developed and Mr. Metcalf was candidate for Governor in 1855 and elected. He d. Aug 26, 1858.

He m. Jan l, 1835 Lucretia Ann Bingham, dau of Nathan Bingham, Esq. of Claremont, NH She d. April l, 1836 leaving an infant who d. the following August. He m. (2) Nov l0, 1843 Martha Ann Gilmore dau of Capt. John Gilmore of Newport NH b. May 28, 1824. Their children:

1. Ralph Metcalf, Jr. b. Aug 8, 1844 m. Aug 6, 1868 Lillie Burdette of Erie, Penn. (no issue)
2. Martha Jane Metcalf b. Sep 6, 1845 d. 1848
3. Frances Elizabeth b. Aug 16, 1847 m. Jan 22, 1866 John J. McDermid, b. Nov 4,1836 Res: Chicago, ILL.

4. Edward Everett Metcalf b. Mar 22, 1854 d. Jan l0, 1858 Martha A. Metcalf widow of Governor Metcalf removed to Chicago after his death and lived with her dau. Mr. Mc Dermid.


2. Horace Metcalf b. May l0, 180l son of John Metcalf and Roby Converse m. Sep l3, 1834 Chloe Cheney dau of Col William Cheney of Newport, NH b. Aug 30, 180l d. 1874. Their children:

2. Sophia Jane Metcalf b. 1827 m. 185l George Mason Gilmore of Charlestown b. 1824. Res: Faribault, Minn.
3. Tryphena M. Metcalf b. 1828 m. 1853 Dwight J. McCann b. at Erie, Penn. 1827. They adopted Florence Ducy b. 1859 and Georgia Ducy b. 1860. Res: Philadelphia.
4. Julian (male) Metcalf b. 1833 m. Julia B. Kinney b.1839 at Mont Vernon, Ohio.

They removed to Nebraska City Nebraska
