Santa Fe Trail 175th. Anniversary Celebration, 1996-1997
Santa Fe Trail Family History Project

In Celebration of the 175th Anniversary, information was collected by the Corazôn de los Caminos Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association on families related to the Santa Fe Trail, 1821-1880. Copies of the family histories received were filed in the Santa Fe Trail Archives at the Las Vegas Carnegie Public Library, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and the Special Collections Branch, Albuquerque Public Library, Edith and Central, Albuquerque, New Mexico, courtesy of the New Mexico Genealogical Society.

"Who were the freighters, stage coach drivers, and soldiers? What do you know about the Jicarilla Apaches, Mouache Utes, Kiowas and Comanches? Do you have any family stories about ciboleros, comancheros, traders or trappers? Who operated the mills, forage stations, and blacksmith shops? What do you know about the Texas Rangers, penitentes, or Gorras Blancas? Were your ancestors cattle drovers, sheep herders, or stone masons? Did they run a store, boarding house, or stage station? When did your family come to the area? Where did they come from and where did they settle? What adventures did they have? Do you have old maps, photographs, drawings, diaries, or other records?"

Previously published references include census enumerations such as La Junta Precinct No. 11, 1860, 1870, 1880, [Fort Union, New Mexico] transcribed and edited by Harry C. Myers, New Mexico Genealogical Society, 1993, and the classic Carson-Bent Boggs Genealogy and Supplement, by Quantrille D. McClung, Denver Public Library, 1962. Some information on the families of Jesus G. Abreu, Carlos Hipolyte Trotier Beaubien, Joel Curtis, Thomas Dawson, John deGraffenried, Charles L. Fraker, Matthias Heck, Henri Lambert, Marion Littrell, Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell, and Richens Lacy Wootton had already been collected locally.
