Brief Synopsis of the John Lilley (Lillie) Family
By Carol A. (Wilson) Wood

John & Cynthia Lillie came to Raton sometime around 1878. The Lilley name has been written three different ways: Lilly, Lilley and Lillie. John passed away around 1908 and Cynthia passed away on June 5, 1928. They both are buried in the Raton Fairmont Cemetery. My grandmother Grace Lillie Wilson was born in Raton March 6, 1883 and at that time it was a log cabin home on Second Street where the Interstate Bank is now. At that time John Lilley had a General Store. From there the family moved to Catskill and ran a store there until around 1902 when he returned to Raton to homestead 160 acres in Sugarite Canyon area from what is now known as Lake Maloya and Lake Dorothey area. He then homesteaded around 1900 in Chico Springs, Colfax County, NM. This was recorded in Clayton on April 15, 1902 Vol. 17, Page 304, which was the only land office at that time. Later, they traded part of the Sugarite land for land in Raton to the Railroad who only received the water rights (Lake Maloya only as they were not interested in Lake Dorothey), the Lilley’s continued to ranch in Sugarite & Chico Springs. The railroad when it no longer needed the water rights, then gave the land and water rights to the City of Raton. Lake Dorothey was named after John & Cynthia’s daughter Nellie Lilley Bloomfield’s eldest daughter Dorothy. John and Cynthia had several children: Grace Lilley Wilson, Nellie Lilley Bloomfield, Fannie Lilley Cassell, Charlie Lilley, Mabel Lilley, and Edelbert Lilley.
