Hope,
New Mexico
Long
time ago the town was
called Badger N.M., and
it was a booming place
because they had water
and lots of it from the
mountains and the
Penasco and there was a
real bad flood in 1941
and it was so bad that
it washed all of the
bottom out of the river
and then it sank into
the ground so the water
dried up. It was a real
prosperous farming
community and my
kinfolks lived there and
farmed. Then the
railroad started that
way from Artesia and
they run out of money so
an old feller and I
don't know his name said
he would go to England
and get the money to
finish the railroad and
he was comes back on the
Titanic and it sunk and
all of his money and so
the town was lost. When
they found out he was
killed the town said
well now all we have is
lots of
"HOPE" and so
there is the name of the
town now. Now
there is nothing left of
the town at all. There
was a really good school
for all 12 grades and
stores and everything.
There was probably 12 or
14 stores and the
streets were real
crooked in the old days
and when they put the
new road it they
straightened it out
some. (story by
