Campbell, John and Janie

Lea County Families, Then and Now, Volume I, 1979

John and Janie Campbell came to Lea County, New Mexico from Comanche, Texas in 1909. They brought four of their seven children with them, which included: Charlie, Mack, Luke and Kate. Luke and Kate were John and Janie's children; Charlie, Mack, Mark, Essie, and Minnie were John's children by his first wife (Cornelia), who was deceased when the children were very small.

The Campbell's settled south of Monument and homesteaded on a ranch. They lived there until their deaths and were buried in the Monument cemetery.

Kate was married to Charlie Anderson before moving to New Mexico, and he also filled on the family homestead.

Charlie was married to Ola Shockley of Comamnche and therir first son, Cullen was born soon after their arrival to New Mexico. The other three children; Gail, Gideon and Sybil were all born in Texas after they returned their home in Comanche County.

Luke was never married and spent most of his life in New Mexico after moving her as a young lad. He worked for various ranches around this county and was considered to be one of the best chuck wagon cooks around these parts.

Marked stayed in Texas and looked after the family holdings there. He was married and had one son, Lyman who resides in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

MMinnie married Walter Wooley and had two children, Lucille and Bailey. They never moved to New Mexico and spent all of their lives in Comanche County, Texas. Walter Wooley was a scholar at Baylor University, and names his son Bailey after the school. However as a young man Bailey died and his sister Lucille Froah still resides in Texas and is a music teacher in Stephenville, Texas.

Essie married Terry Brandt, a farmer in Lamkin, Texas. They had four sons; Campbell, Day, Felix and Leo. These children of Terry and Essie still reside in various parts of Texas. Mack helped his father on the ranch and in later years, John turned most of the ranching operations over to him. Mack married Georgia Thornton (grandaughter of B. L. Knowles) and lived on the ranch for several years before relocating on a ranch near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mack and Georgia raised their five childfren here; they are: John Mack, Ralph, Chales, Sylvia (Janie), and Norma Jo. They lived on the ranch until Mack's death in 1961.

The Mack Campbell ranch is still operated by his widow (Georgia) and son (Charles) and son-in-law Leroy Sumruld.  /p>
