Seventy-eight markers to set

Pluck Atkins 1937-1976, Joe Jackson 1925-1984, Octavia E. Lucas 1890-1936 and Ilie Anderson 1888-1970 are but a few of the names on the seventy-eight headstones awaiting to be set at the African American, Everglade Cemetery, south of Hobbs, New Mexico.

The headstones arranged for by local historian David Minton and donated by local mortuary companies like Sadler and Sons of Hobbs.

Everglade Cemetery located approximately 2 miles south of Hobbs was established at a time when ethnic classes and cultures seldom mingled, associated or were laid to rest in the same area.
