Elishaby Hickman, b: 1805, Georgia, d: Dec 1, 1882, Llano Co. Texas, was the mother of John Franklin Hickman. To date "1979", no information has been found on his father except he was born in Alabama. According to the date of the oldest child it is believed that there parents would have been married about 1824/25, in Alabama. The children: Green Hickman b:1825; Thomas Hickman b: 1828; Rebecca Hickman b: 1830; John Franklin Hickman, b:1831; Dekalb Hickman b: 1835; George W. Hickman b: 1836 and Daniel Hickman b: 1840, were born in Alabama. Elizabeth Hickman b: 1843 and Henry Hickman b: 1849, d: 1893, buried in Pecan Cemetery, Llano Co. Texas, were born in Arkansas. So the family came from Alabama to Arkansas between 1840 and 1843. John Franklin Hickman, served in the Civil War. The following is recorded on his military record: The command was organized at Warren Arkansas. He served from June 16, 1862 to the surrender in 1865. He enlisted in the 24th Arkansas Infantry, Company "D", CSA. Most of this company was captured at Arkansas Post. It was then consolidated with the 19th Arkansas and surrendered at Marshall, Texas. A statement of deposition of A. G. Stedman who certified he served with John F. Hickman stated, " He became a 3rd Lieutenant in Company "C" in 1862 and served til 1864. Served later in Blocker's Battery. This company was part of the 19th Arkansas Regiment in the "Trans Miso" (?) Department." John Franklin Hickman first married, Mary Ann Reeves, Jan 3, 1861, Bradley Co. Arkansas, there were no children by this marriage. Little is known of John F. Hickman's second wife, Mary Louise Lindsey. Her parents were Poly A. Hicks, and George Lindsey, both born in Tennessee. She was apparently reared by her grandmother, Nancy Hicks, B; Jul 10, 1801 in South Carolina, d: Sept 21, 1882, buried in Pecan Cemetery, Llano, Texas, as appears in the Bradley County, Arkansas census records from 1850 (age 9.) and in the 1860 (age 10) in the household of Nancy Hicks. She was married in Bradley County, Arkansas, Dec 26, 1865, to Isaac Jackson Hunt. One child was born to this marriage. Lee Hunt, who later died in Texas. I am told that, "Grandmaw Hickman had an old sorrel mare and was the "Doc" in Llano and later in Bronte, Texas. One sister is known, Nancy Jane Lindsey, who married, Thomas Hickman, brother to John Franklin Hickman. Thomas and Nancy were married by 1858, and I am sure this was in Bradley County, Arkansas. The children of Thomas Long and Sarah Elizabeth Hickman were: (1) Lelah Mae Long, b: Mar 10, 1890, married Aug 29, 1906, Robert Lee, Texas, Alexander E. Rodgers b: Mar 9, 1884, Erath Co., Texas, d: May 29, 1975, Hobbs, NM, buried Eunice, NM. Jesse Randolph Reeder had 1st married Vente Leola Adams, b: Sept 18, 1888, Killeen, Texas, d: Nov 1909, Killeen, Texas. (5) Tomie Ethel Long, b: Jan 9, 1897, Llano, Texas, married Walter Oscar Meeks, b: 1891, Texas. Note of interest: Family tradition states that Joe and Clell's great-grandfather Meeks was killed by the Klu Klux Klan, in Kansas or Missouri during the time of Quantrell's Raiders. His great grandmother told him that one night they came for him and asked which "side" he was on, the Klan or those for the abolition of slavery? When he said "neither", they hanged him. (6) Wylie Long, b: Jan 14, 1899, Llano, Texas, d: Jul 12, 1970, Ft. Davis, Texas, buried Eunice, NM. Wylie was a bachelor who lived at home for many years. He had bought a ranch out of Ft. Davis, living there alone and was murdered in his bed. It was several days before he was found. To date "1979" his murderers have not been identified.
