Chess Pie
A favorite of the 14 children of Harriett Josephine McAlister Owen 1857-1934.
Grandmother of Mary Lou Owen Boddy.
2 cups sugar
1 Tbls. flour
1 Tbls. Cornmeal
4 eggs
¼ cup melted butter
¼ cup milk
1 tsp. Vanilla
Mix thoroughly sugar, flour and cornmeal. Add beaten eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla. Place mixture in a 9” pie pan lined with your favorite pastry.
Bake in a moderate oven (350°) and bake until firm. (knife should come out lean when tested ½ way between edge of pastry and the center).
Oven temperature and time are really not known because she cooked on a wood stove.
