Casey Ranch History

About 25 miles southwest of Fort Stanton during the 1800's a Frenchman by the name of Leopold Chene had filed on a claim in the area which included present day Tinnie. As a Texan by name of Robert Casey, along with his family arrived at a small settlement on the lower Hondo, then known as Plaza de San Jose (Missouri Plaza) during the winter of 1867-68, he was looking for a place to settle. Resting for a few days at the village he decided to move on up the valley where the grass would perhaps be greener. He passed through the Chene property and went on to Fort Stanton. However, being interested in the valley and looking for a place to graze his cattle, and liking the Chene place particularly, Casey made a deal with Chene for the land that would for many years be known as Casey's Ranch.

The beginning of the Casey Ranch on the Rio Hondo marked the era of the arrival of Anglo settlers in the region, and for almost a century the Casey family worked the ranch, grazing their cattle in the rich valley and adding more land to the ranch when it became available.

Finally after more than ninety years on the Hondo, the Casey's sold all their property to the Lincoln County Livestock Company, an organization named by Robert O. Anderson. Through his efforts, many improvements have been added to the region, making the area around Tinnie one of the most scenic places in the entire Hondo Valley.
