Homer Barkley Dies of Injuries
Morgan Homer Barkley, 66, prominent rancher, died Monday morning at 11 o’clock while en route to the hospital at Alamogordo in the Mullins-O’Dell ambulance. He had been injured two hours earlier in a tractor accident on his ranch near Mayhill.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in Mayhill with the Reverend Roy Priest of Carlsbad officiating. Interment was in the Mayhill cemetery. Mullins-O’Dell handled arrangements.
Cecil Barkley, Lowell Bass, Irvin Scott, Doyle Scott, Adna Scott and Kenneth Potter, Jr. Served as pall bearers.
The deceased who was born in Bowie, Texas, July 2, 1884, had lived in the vicinity of Mayhill since 1888. He was married to Lillie Arthur on January 1, 1908, at Mayhill.
He had attended Weed School and spent his life as a cowboy and rancher until injuries suffered when his tractor rolled into an arroyo Monday morning brought death.
The accident occurred as he was planting corn and, in some way, backed his tractor off the bank of James Canyon at a spot where it is almost 25 feet deep.
Mrs. Barkley, who witnessed the mishap, called for help. She was heard by a highway department employee working on the road near the Barkley home. He rushed to her and then went for help.
His wife, two sons five grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive. His sons are Charles Homer Barkley of Artesia and Cyril George of Lubbock, Texas.
