Mrs. Parker was born Miss Josephine Potter, in Joplin, Missouri, January 26, 1869. She was therefore just past her 80th year. From Missouri she went to Texas with her family where she met and was united in marriage with Mr. John Cicero Parker February 10, 1889 in McCullough County.
In the same year Mr. And Mrs. Parker, hearing of the wonderful new country of the Sacramentos in New Mexico, migrated here and settled at Weed, which community was just then settling up with the pioneer families, mostly from Texas. The most of Mr. And Mrs. Parker’s wedded life was spent in the Weed vicinity, where they reared a family of five sons and six daughters, all surviving the mother. They are the former Otero County Sheriff: J. W. Parker, Alamogordo; Gaston and George Carlsbad; John L., Mayhill; Thomas, Sanders, Arizona; Mrs Pearl Prather, Engle; Allie Bassett, South Dakota; Mrs. Cloy Knock, Klamath Falls, Oregon; Mrs. Lizzie Paxton, Elk; Eight of the parental children were present at the funeral. The deceased is one of twelve children and is the last surviving member of her parental family.
Mrs. Parker was beloved by a multitude of friends and appreciated for her fine character. She was a typical pioneer woman and left a great deal for posterity and especially her large circle of kinship.
She was active, hale and hearty until five years ago, since which time she has been an invalid. She will be remembered by old and young alike for her sweet smile, kind words, and deeds. She spent a long and useful life in the service and esteem of her family, friends and neighbors. Mr. And Mrs. Parker’s sixtieth wedding anniversary occurred on Feb.10 just passed. The loving remembrance of her is her best monument.
