Bass Cemetery,
Otero County, New Mexico


Located off NM 130 in Cox Canyon about 6 2/3 miles from Cloudcroft. This cemetery is a closed cemetery in the middle of the Waterfall Addition 2.  (See map)  Croft Riggs "Pete" Bass acquired this cemetery in 1977.  He placed a cable and post fence around a 4200 square foot section.  Some others have put 2 small fence areas within this cemetery.  Diphtheria took the lives of many children in the early 1900 and their graves are on the north and west side of the cemetery and only marked with stones.  No identification can be found.

Bass family history has two brothers immigrating from England, with one settling in Indiana and the other in North Carolina.  The nortorious Sam Bass is a descendant of the Indiana brother.  Charles Freeman Bass, listed below, is the grandson of the North Carolina brother.  He is the son of Redding (born 1812 - North Carolina) and Elizabeth Lays (born 1815 - North Carolina or Georgia) Bass.

Notes:
(1) Married Andrew "Andy" Jackson Benson in Young County, Texas. They were parents of Dora Adel,
    Laurence Lee, Elzevir "Elzy" (living in Fowler, CA), and John William "Willie".  She died of 
    typhoid fever.
(2) First moved to Young County, Texas and then to Sacramento Mountains in 1885.  In 1920 he moved
    La Luz, NM.  He had 2 sisters and 2 half sisters, one of which was Mrs. Yancy, living in Uvalde,
    Texas.  He married Martha V. Benson.
(3) Son of Charles Freeman and Martha V. Bass. Married Margaret Ethel Daugherty on 8-1-1900 at Weed,    
    New Mexico.  Moved with dad in 1885.
(4) Wife of Anderson Cylvester Bass.  Had four children - Iloa, Walter Elvy, Sybel Iona, and Virgil.    
(5) Wife of Cyrus Elonzo Bass and daughter of Jasper Newton and Mary Louisa Daugherty.  Had seven 
    sons - Liewell Freeman (born 9-9-1901, died in Alamogordo, June 1969, buried at Mayhill), Terence
    Jasper (born 4-13-1903, died in Ruidoso, Mar. 1976, buried at Ruidoso), Rupert Arle (born 
    5-30-1905, died in Forth Worth, TX, 1-18-1971, buried at Forth Worth, TX), Aaron Ansel "Fat" 
    (born 2-21-1907, died in Alamogordo, 10-28-1981, buried at Alamogordo), Byron Noel "Snooks"
    (born 12-25-1908, died in Alamogordo, 1-28-1943, buried at Alamogordo), Croft Riggs "Pete" 
    (born 3-10-1910 and living in Odessa, TX), and a still born boy.
(6) Married Charles Freeman Bass in Graham, Young, TX.  Had four children - Cyrus Elonzo, Anderson
    Cylvester, Noble Charles (buried in Alamogordo), and Carrie Hyatt (Midland, TX).
(7) Married Lillie Merrill, son of Charles Freeman and Martha V. Bass.
(8) Son of William Forest and Roberta (Brown) Culbertson.  Brother of Walter Joyce Culbertson, who
    married Minnie Myrtle Daugherty, the daughter of Jasper Newton Daugherty, Jr.
(9) Son of Hiram Newton (3-3-1809 to 12-27-1870, buried at Rockdale, TX) and Mary Jane (Goodnight)
    (7-31-1829 to 3-7-1919, buried at Ballinger, TX) Daugherty.
(10)Daughter of Samuel M C (1-15-182 to 3-7-1919) and Margaret Louvica (Thomelson, born 11-17-1826)
    Gardner.  Parents bured at Hylton, Nolan, Texas.  Married Jasper Newton Daugherty, Sr., 8-6-1874.
    Had 5 sons and 3 daughters - Jasper Newton, Jr. (born 1-25-1876 in Rockdale, TX), Mary Izilla
    (married a Quick, born 11-24-1878 in Nolan Co., TX), Margaret Ethel (married Cyrus Elonzo Bass, 
    born 8-25-1880 in Nolan Co., TX), Samuel Hansford (born 5-1-1884 in Hylton, Nolan, TX), 
    Terrence Vincan (born 5-26-1886 in Hylton, Nolen, TX), Susanna Lillian (married a Fleming, born
    12-14-1888 in Nolan Co., TX), and Lemial Jason (born 6-1-1892 in Hay Canyon, Weed, Otero, NM).
