There was a Diphtheria epidemic in 1892 that was so bad that old Dr. Gilbert
was very down and out because so many of his patients were dying of the
disease. It really took a toll on his life and he died in March 1, 1923.
(See J G Gilbert in the Alamogordo Monte Vista Cemetery.)

There is a story about this cemetery in the Mountain Monthly, July 2003.

There is a plaque that reads:

                             Burial Site of 50+ people
Many victims of Diphtheria epidemic in 1892
