Atlantic County, New Jersey Pension Data
Charles E. Vreeland
S. 7545. Kathrina E. T. Vreeland is the widow of the late Rear Admiral Charles E. Vreeland, United States Navy,
who died September 27, 1916; she is now drawing a pension of $30 per month under the general law (certificate No.
817988) and asks that it may be increased to $50 per month.
Admiral Vreeland was born in New Jersey, March 10, 1852. He entered the Navy by appointment as midshipman July
27, 1866, and continued in active service in the various grades to which he was duly promoted until March 10, 1914,
when he was retired as rear admiral, having reached the age of 62 years. He was made rear admiral December 27,
1909, During the War with Spain he served on the Dolphin and was a brave and efficient officer. He served his
country honorably and faithfully in the Navy for nearly 48 years. He died of disease of heart and kidneys incurred
in the service and line of duty.
Mrs. Vreeland is about 59 years of age, and as the evidence shows, in very delicate health and entirely unable
to earn a living or to do anything in the way of self-support. The evidence further shows That her means consist
of real estate notes or investments in the District of Columbia to the amount of $31,500, yielding her an income
of about $1,700 a year, a portion of the principal being derived from life insurance policies of her late husband.
It also appears that she is alone and without relatives to care for her; that she does not own a residence but
rents a small apartment which she says, she will not be able to maintain on her present income and pension of $50
per month is recommended.
