CLEARY - The funeral of Mrs. Cleary, wife of Police Officer John J. Cleary took place from St. Mary's Catholic Church this morning. Mrs. Cleary died suddenly on Saturday morning having given birth to a child on the night before. The midwife who attended her has been blamed by the friends of the family for her want of skill in attending to the patient who died from loss of blood. When County Physician Dunham learned the facts he decided that in inquest should be held and a jury was impanneled yesterday and viewed the remains. Testimony will be taken in the case tomorrow. CROASDALE - Suddenly, on the morning of the 17th, Jacob C. Croasdale, aged 41 years. The Trenton Times, Monday 19 November 1883 Front Page Story : Killed by a Fall - At noon on Saturday, Jacob C. Croasdale, a house painter whose home is at 148 Mercer street, was engaged in painting the residence of Mrs. Joseph T. Welling, on Bellevue avenue. He had placed the ladder upon which he worked on a soap box on the roof of a bay window at the side of the house, and was at the top of the ladder, when the box slipped and he was thrown to the ground, striking his head. FORD - John J. Ford The tedious illness of John J. Ford, proprietor of "The Office: on Green street, ended in death yesterday morning. Mr. Ford had been the proprietor of his restaurant for nearly twenty years, and in that time had become known to almost every politician and public man in the State. His place was the resort of all such, and especially during Legislative sessions it was filled every evening with parties of public men of all parties, from United States Senators down to lobbyists. Game suppers and oysters were specialties in which his friends claimed that he excelled any man in the country. When Captain John J. Hall, of New Brunswick, disappeared, several months ago, he left Mr. Ford in the lurch for nearly ten thousand dollars of borrowed money. Since that time Mr. Ford's health has been very poor, and he has been confined to his bed for several weeks. Mr. Ford began business in Trenton by supplying provisions to the soldiers in Camp Perrine, near this city, during the War. From profits thus gained he started his restaurant in 1865. William Hart, of 111 Mott street, Chambersburg, employed as a mason on the new building which is going up next to St. Mary's Cathedral, on Warren street, died yesterday, from lock-jaw, after an illness of ten days. HOLZMAN - Joseph G. Holzman The funeral of the late Joseph G. Holzman, who died on Sunday, took place from the residence, 17 Centre street, this morning. He was twenty-five years of age, a cigar-make by trade, and had a large circle of society and other friends. The funeral today was attended by St. Frances Pioneer Corps in uniform, headed by Winkler's Seventh Regiment Band, and by St. Peter's Beneficial and the Cecelia Singing Societies. HOWELL - OLD TYLER HOWELL DEAD, One of The Best Know Masons. The Peaceful Passing Away of a Man Who Had Received all the Degrees Possible in This Country - Sketch of His Society Connections. After a lingering illness that was more the result of the infirmities of age than any specific ailment, old Amos Howell breathed his last at the family residence on Willow street about half-past twelve o'clock this morning. Mr. Howell was in his seventy-ninth year. He was one of the oldest Masons in the State, and had been Tyler of Masonic Lodges in this city for years. He had received all the degrees possible for him in this country. He was born in the old Jenny Lind Hotel, at the corner of Warren and Ferry streets, on March 2d, 1805. He joined Trenton Lodge, No. 3 I.O.O.F., Grand Lodge August 6th, 1840. In 1850 he was appointed Outside Guardian of Concordia Lodge, No.4 and served in that capacity up to the time of his death. He was appointed Grand Herald of the Grand Lodge in 1857, and held the position till 1881. He joined the Trenton Encampment, No. 2 I.O.O.F. on October 14, 1839, and was Sentinel of the Encampment form 1850. He was appointed Outside Sentinel of the Grand Encampment in 1867, and retained the position till 1880. He took the Apprentice Degree in Trenton Lodge, No. 5 F. and A.M. LAYTON - A CENTENARIAN'S DEATH, Old Mrs. Rachel Layton, Reputed to Have Been 106 Year Old. Mrs. Rachel Layton,c ol., died at her daughters residence, 12 Wood street, yesterday morning. The old lady is reputed t have been in her one hundred and sixty year. She was born the year after the Declaration of Independence, at Cranbury Neck, Middlesex county. Up to a few years back, she had been sprightly, and delighted in attending to the odds and ends of housekeeping. The weight of years, however, after she turned the hundredth milestone, began to have its effect, and for many months past she has been confined to her bedroom. Mrs. Layton lived in Trenton a full half century. She was married, but her husband has been dead a number of years. The couple had an even dozen children. Some of these married and the result was three children, who also married and were blessed with four children. Three of the latter died. At the time of her death the venerable old lady had living ten children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The last is a girl aged seven years. When in robust health, Mrs. Layton used often to tell stories of the early wars of the country. She talked of General Washington always as if he were still living. READ - Anthony A. Read, formerly a policeman in Trenton, and of late employed as night-watchman at the Deaf and Dumb Institution, was found dead in his bead at his home, 312 West State street, at five o'clock yesterday afternoon. He had been in good health in the morning and his heath was utterly unexpected. The physician who was called decided that death resulted from heart disease. Mr. Read was a comrade in Bayard Post. No.
